The Genealogy Unit of the Cook County Clerk's Bureau of Vital Records provides non-certified versions of birth, death and marriage records for the purpose of genealogical research for Cook County. The Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871 destroyed all Cook County vital records prior to that date, records for Cook County begin in 1872.

Applying Couples must appear together at one of the Cook County Clerk's six locations. They must: Fill out and sign a marriage license application. Present valid identification with proof of age. The marriage license fee is $60. Applicants who have divorced must provide the date the divorce was finalized upon applying for a marriage license.
